FOUR young men have stepped up their game to take a prize at the World Championships of Performing Arts which started last Saturday in Los Angeles.

PIC: Iz OIAM 2

The four 22-year-olds — Fairul Zahid, Naim Syah Razad, Hanafi Rosdi and Shaikh Hasrul Hafiz — are part of the Aswara (National Arts Culture and Heritage Academy) Dance Company. They will audition to enter the semifinals of the “Olympics of the Performing Arts”. They will perform five dances — contemporary, lyrical, musical, song and dance, and ethnic.

The semifinal is on July 30 and the final on Aug 1. The WCOPA is held annually in California, and is the first and only international competition to find the best performing artistes worldwide. Competitors are judged in acting, singing, dancing, modelling, instrumental music, and a variety of categories.

Like the Olympics, the finest competitors are qualified and invited. The Aswara team is one of six dance groups from Malaysia. The Malaysian competitors, 12 in all for the various categories, were selected after taking part in the Road To Hollywood talent search at Istana Budaya, Kuala Lumpur.

The event, organised by Allstars Performing Arts (M) Sdn Bhd, is supported by the Information, Communication and Culture Ministry. Among the four dance solo competitors is Aswara lecturer Suhaili Ahmad Kamil, 25. who also teaches dance at the Arora School of Dance in Subang Jaya.

For the vocal category, Malaysia’s bets are on Cheryl Koh, 14, and Khairullah Ezuan Sulaini, 28, and on Rhythm of Borneo for the instrumental music category. Koh, who has been singing for a few years already and a Disney Channel star, gave the channel a boost with a 10-second ad last Sunday. Khairullah took part in 8TV’s One In A Million TV reality show Season 2. This is not the first time Malaysia has entered WCOPA.

The most well-known winners were Siti Sarah Raisuddin, who won the vocal championship last year, sitarist Samual J Dass and tabla player Prakash Kandasamy, singer Noryn Aziz, bands Deja Mos and Tuku Kame, instrumental musician duo Mohram and singer Dina of Malaysian Idol 1 fame.

PINGU: Iz OIAM 2?? hope he will perform better than when he performed in OIAM! This is a prestiges Competition and everyone in other country will judge us based on the performance of our contestant!

Iz believes to be a successful singer, one has to entertain with a style uniquely one’s own

Singer Iz Sulaini aims to put Malaysia on the world music map. So going to Hollywood to compete in the World Championship of Performing Arts is right on track, writes DENNIS CHUA KHAIRULLAH Ezuan Sulaini always believes in looking good. The 28-year-old singer and songwriter better known as Iz dresses stylishly, drawing inspiration from anything from a colourfully painted building or a work of art.

“While singing is my passion, fashion goes hand-in-hand with it,” he says.
“To be a successful singer, one has to entertain with a style uniquely one’s own, and here’s where having fashion sense is important.”

He believes that an artiste has to brand himself in order to be memorable.
Iz, who sported a pair of “cyclops” sunglasses (or Maison Martin Margiela sunglasses) at the recent Anugerah Bintang Popular Berita Harian 2009, will be representing Malaysia at the annual World Championship of Performing Arts (WCOPA) in July. Joining the One In A Million 2 (OIAM2), ninth-placed in the vocals category of WCOPA, are OIAM2 runner-up Shila Amir Amzah and 14-year-old singer Cheryl Koh.

The trio were recently selected for WCOPA at the Road To Hollywood talent search in Istana Budaya, Kuala Lumpur. They will spend two weeks at the championship in Hollywood. Prior to Hollywood, they will be participating in vocal and movement classes conducted by Road to Hollywood organiser AllStars Performing Arts this month. Iz says: “At WCOPA, I’ll be given a minute to perform a song and I’ll be singing pop, Broadway, R&B and jazz. I’ll also be doing a duet with Shila and Cheryl.”

He will be the second OIAM contestant to join WCOPA after Siti Sarah Raisuddin, who won the championship last year. An advertising graduate and cross-cultural communications postgraduate of the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology in Australia, Iz, who hails from Kuala Terengganu but grew up in Kuala Lumpur, entered his first singing contest in 2003.
“It was the MTV/JVC Sound Education Contest with participants coming from Southeast Asia,” he says, adding that he also joined The Young KL Singers.

One of Iz’s self-penned songs, Gonna Be All Right, has been used in the Indian movie The Successor: Private and Confidential. The film in English is a “mockumentary” of the IT industry in India. He went on a tour of Bangalore, Chennai and Goa in India early this year to promote the song which features musician C. Loco of Poetic Ammo fame and was up for Best Collaboration at the annual Avima Music Awards 2010.

Iz won third place.
“My promotion drive also took me to the British capital for London Fashion Week, Malaga and Barcelona in Spain and Singapore last February,” he says. “I love travelling as I get to meet new people in entertainment with whom I can network.” This month, he will be promoting the song in Hyderabad, Mumbai and New Delhi, as well performing it at the Cannes Film Festival in France. Back home Iz is busy with his first full studio album Gemini. Gemini is an expansion of the Gonna Be All Right EP he launched in 2008 shortly after OIAM2. “The album is named after my zodiac. It’ll feature Gonna Be All Right and the earlier single ALONE.

I’m also planning to have showcases in Kuala Lumpur and Singapore next month,” he says, adding that among the composers and lyricists he is working with is AJ of Pop Shuvit. ALONE has received good airplay in radio stations in India, Australia and Spain.

It recently made it to the Top 10 of Malaysia’s Hitz.FM. “In my showcase next month, I’ll perform songs from the album as well as cover versions I sang in OIAM2.” Iz has also done a star-studded music video for Gonna Be All Right.

It features OIAM1 champion Suki Low and actresses Amber Chia and Dynas Mokhtar. His self-penned, self-composed song, Bersama Together, featured the vocals of actress Nora Danish.
Last month, he performed his new song Jauh for the first time in TV3 talk show Malaysia Hari Ini. “Two great singers, songwriters and composers I’d love to work with are Aizat Amdan and Faizal Tahir.

I’m also a huge fan of Indonesian singer-actress Agnes Monica and of course, Datuk Siti Nurhaliza.” Iz has also come on board as an ambassador of the government’s ongoing anti-smoking campaign and for Voices of Audio Technica, which is synonymous with the Grammy Awards.
What his ultimate goal in life? “To put Malaysia on the world music map.”
